The Winery

Domaine de la Guicharde  is located in the south of the Rhone Valley, in the Massif d’Uchaux, a winegrowing region that is highly acclaimed by wine lovers.  The winery has been organically certified since 2008, and biodynamically certified since 2010.

The winery has 31 hectares of vines, an olive grove, and a further 20 hectares of woods and brush that help to create and maintain a rich and varied biodiversity. With views across to the Mont Ventoux, the Dentelles de Montmirail and the surrounding vineyards, it’s a fantastically picturesque and relaxing spot.

Grenache Noir and Syrah grapes are grown for the expressive and fruity Côtes du Rhône and Côtes du Rhône Villages Massif d’Uchaux wines red wines.  The Revue du Vin de France wine magazine recently included the winery in its selection of the best wines of the 2016 vintage, and the wine selected for the Gourmet Odyssey Wine Experience won silver medal in the Concours des Vins d’Orange 2016 wine competition.  The winery regularly features in the main wine guides such as Le Guide Hachette des Vins and the Bettane & Desseauve wine guide.

Region

The Rhône Valley offers one of the most diverse ranges of France’s wine growing regions. As you head south of Lyon, following the valley of the great river, the sun gets stronger and the climate decidedly more Mediterranean.

Our vines are to be found in the Côtes du Rhône Villages Massif d'Ucahaux appellation.  The Massif d'Uchaux is one of only 18 areas that are allowed to use the name of the location with the Côtes du Rhône Villages label, a sign of a superior quality wine.

The stony and sandy soil of the area helps make fresh and concentrated wines.  The pebbles, as in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, absorb the heat during the day and release it during the night to help the grapes slowly mature.

The strength of the Massif d'Uchaux wines is due to its very disctint terroir at mid altitude, conditions ideally adapted to making great wines which are highly sought after by wine lovers.

Vineyard Visit. Meet the winemakers, Isabelle and Arnaud Guichard at Domaine de la Guicharde, Rhone Valley, France

The Winemakers Welcome You...

Arnaud and Isabelle Guichard settled at Domaine de la Guicharde in 1988 and have been working in the vineyard and making their delicious wines with passion ever since.

Caring and friendly winemakers, they’ll welcome you with open arms to their winery to talk about their work and share a glass of wine in the courtyard or kitchen of their old Provencal villa. The atmosphere and meals during the harvest are so legendary that Isabelle has even had a book published of her harvest recipes!

Over the years they have converted the entirety of the winery to being organic, and this voyage has brought them naturally to work biodynamically, giving more vigour to their vines and more expression to their wines. By observing the vines and the biodiversity of the estate, they look to use the surrounding nature to create a harmony and elaborate their wines as naturally as possible. It’s a fascinating approach that will leave a lasting impression!

Terroir du Miocène

The expressive Terroir de Miocène is the red wine selected for the Gourmet Odyssey Wine Experience.

This Côtes du Rhône Villages Massif d’Uchaux wine is made using the grapes grown in a plot of vines located on an ancient beach from the Miocene era.  With the views from the vineyard of the Mont Ventoux, the Dentelles de Montmirail, and the surrounding brush, it’s difficult to imagine that millions of years ago the Massif d’Uchaux was an island surrounded by sea.

The wine is a blend of Grenache Noir predominately and Syrah. It has a deep ruby colour and it has black fruit aromas. It’s a fruity wine with a touch of pepper, and elegant tannins to add structure.

Fermentation and ageing occur in stainless steel vats to accentuate the taste of the fruit and terroir.  Depending on the year, the wine is bottled 14 to 18 months after the harvest.

Wine lover gift in the Rhone Valley. Rent a vine and and learn about wine-making

Welcome to Domaine de la Guicharde

New for the 2018 vintage, we are delighted to welcome Domaine de la Guicharde to the family of Gourmet Odyssey Wine Experience partner vineyards.

Domaine de la Guicharde is an organic and biodynamic vineyard in the south of the Côtes du Rhône wine producing region.  The charming winemakers, Arnaud and Isabelle Guichard, make wonderfully fruity and aromatic wines that bring out the best of the Massif d’Uchaux terroir, one of the Côtes du Rhône Villages appellations.

Millions of years ago, the Massif d’Uchaux used to be surrounded by sea in the Miocene era, giving the name of the wine chosen for the Gourmet Odyssey Wine Experience, “Terroir de Miocène”.  You can even see where the beach and cliff used to be, and you can spot lots of shellfish fossils in the rocks.

As well as making great wines, Arnaud and Isabelle are very friendly and welcoming winemakers, making them the ideal choice to become Gourmet Odyssey’s latest partner.  We can’t wait for the first Wine Experience Days in 2018 to learn more about their story, their wines and their philosophy for encouraging the natural biodiversity of their estate.
