The Winery

Nestled in the heart of the Dentelles de Montmirail, Château Cohola is a gem of a vineyard, surrounded by nature, with a spectacular view down over the Rhone Valley.

Chateau Cohola is located in the picturesque village of Sablet, 20km to the west of Orange in the Rhone Valley, overlooking the magnificent vineyards that produce the AOC Cotes du Rhone Sablet wines, one of the few villages that can add their name to the Cotes du Rhone Village appellation.  From the winery you have a great view of Sablet and the Cotes du Rhone plain.

The winery is organically certified and has 4 hectares of vines, planted in 15 terraces with Syrah, Mourvèdre and Grenache Noir for the red and rosé wines, and Viognier, Roussanne, Marsanne, Clairette and Grenache Blanc for the white wines.  The vineyards make up half of the estate, the other half being made up of olive trees, oak trees for producing truffles, cherry trees and bee hives.

Chateau Cohola is regularly praised for the quality of their wines, and recently won a silver medal at the 2020 Concours Général Agricole show in Paris, as well as a bronze medal at the 2022 Millésime Bio organic wine fair for the 2018 Cotes du Rhone Villages Sablet, the red wine chosen for the Wine Experience.  The winery also often features in the press and wine guides such as Cuisine et Vins de France, and the 2020 Betanne+Desseauve guide, which rated the 2016 vintage 16/20 and noted it for being “a generous and complex wine”.

Adopt a vine at the Château Cohola winery and get involved in making your own wine with the Gourmet Odyssey Wine Experience

The Rhône Valley offers one of the most diverse ranges of France’s wine growing regions. As you head south of Lyon, following the valley of the great river, the sun gets stronger and the climate decidedly more Mediterranean.

Our vines are to be found in the Cotes du Rhône Villages Sablet appellation.  Sablet is one of only 21 areas that are allowed to use the name of the location with the Côtes du Rhône Villages label, a sign of a superior quality wine.

The stony and sandy soil of the area helps make fresh and concentrated wines.  The pebbles, as in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, absorb the heat during the day and release it during the night to help the grapes slowly mature.

The Sablet vineyards are characterised by a scree top layer and sandy loam subsoil. The vines that face west benefit from the soft setting sun, and are perfectly adapted to producing wines for keeping.

Vineyard Visit. Meet the winemakers, Cheli & Jerome Busato at Chateau Cohola, Rhone Valley, France

The Winemakers Welcome You...

Jérôme and Cheli Busato met on the university benches in Andalucía, and their journey has been intimately linked with wine ever since as they have followed careers in Bordeaux and Burgundy before heading to the Rhone Valley where they decided to settle.  Having founded a wine trading company in 2002, they decided to buy a winery in Sablet in 2013 to be able to fully express their passion for wine, and so Château de Cohola was born with the aim of delighting the hearts of wine lovers (Cohola is a an acrostic of the latin COr HOminis LAetificat)!

Since taking over the winery, Cheli and Jérôme have patiently restored the 15 vineyard terraces that they cultivate organically.  Becoming winemakers is born out of their passion for wine and their desire to manage the wine-making process as naturally as possible from the beginning to the end, and true to their principals.

They are a very passionate and friendly couple who are eager to share their know-how and unique philosophy of the terroir that surrounds them.

Château Cohola

The wine chosen for the Gourmet Odyssey Wine Experience is the Cotes du Rhone Villages Sablet.  This elegant red wine is one of the 21 named Cotes du Rhone Villages AOC wine.

This appellation covers 300 hectares on the sandy mountain at the foot of the Dentelles de Montmirail, benefiting from a Mediterranean climate and a special geology of sand, clay and red sandstone.

Château Cohola’s Cotes du Rhone Sablet is produced from west facing vineyards on the slopes of the Cheval Long mountain, a great terroir of sandy loam and limestone that receives the last rays as the sun sets.  It’s also perfect for producing truffles.

The wine is a blend of 60% Grenache and 40% Syrah that has been harvested by hand, the juice being turned into wine using only the yeast cells found naturally on the grape skins, and then aged separately in barrel for 12 to 18 months before being blended.

It’s an intense ruby coloured wine with a lovely nose that reveal the aromas of its terroir, blueberry, rosemary, and truffle.  It’s a complex wine on the palate that is fruity, and well balanced with a nice long spicy finish.

Jean Dujardin tastes the wines of Château Cohola

Jean Dujardin on the film set at Château Cohola

Château Cohola enjoyed a magical moment on the set of the latest Jean Dujardin film “Les chemins de Pierre”, a story that retraces the journey made by Sylvain Tesson across France’s pathways.  One of the scenes was filmed at the winery in the vineyard just next to the plot where the adopted vines of the Gourmet Odyssey apprentice winemakers are to be found!

ur winemakers had a great time with the film crew and of course shared a glass of their great delicious wine.  We might even get to see them in the film if the director doesn’t edit out the take!  To be followed…
