The Winery

The stunning Domaine Chapelle is situated in the upper village of Santenay-le-Haut, and commands impressive views over the vines that slope down onto the plain below.

In 2009, Domaine Chapelle became certified as an Organic Winegrower by Qualité France in recognition of the environmentally respectful way in which the vines are cultivated, and the wine is made.

The winery has 20ha of vines, spread from the Côtes de Nuits region in the north, down through the Côtes de Beaune region to Santenay, enabling Domaine Chapelle to offer an impressive range of quality red and white wines. These include wines such as Gevrey-Chambertin, Ladoix, Pommard, Volnay, Meursault, and several Premier Cru’s from Aloxe-Corton, Chassagne-Montrachet, and of course Santenay, as well as some regional Burgundy wines and Bourgogne Aligoté, a refreshing, light white wine to be enjoyed by itself or often mixed with crème de cassis to make the famous Kir.

Over the years, Domaine Chapelle has received many accolades and praise from the leading wine guides and competitions.  The Guide Carité des Bonnes Adresses du Vin Bio 2022-23 organic wine guide chose four of Domaine Chapelle’s wines, including the 2019 Clos des Cornières Santenay red, chosen for the Gourmet Odyssey adopt-a-vine experience in Burgundy.  “A wine for a sophisticated dinner.”  The 2023 Guide Hachette des Vins awarded Domaine Chapelle 2 stars for the 2019 Les Petites Lolières Aloxe Corton Premier Cru, and one star to the 2020 Saint Jean Santenay Village white wine, described as being "a faultless Santenay that is dynamic and gourmand." Domaine Chapelle won two silver medals at the prestigious 2022 Millésime Bio international organic wine fair for their 2020 Santenay Premier Cru Beaurepaire red and white wines.

At Domaine Chapelle you have the choice of adopting chardonnay vines to make organic white wine or pinot noir to make red wine.

Region

Home to many of France’s very finest wines, the picturesque Burgundy winegrowing region is made up of a patchwork of small vineyards. The region has two main grape varieties; chardonnay for the white wines, and the famous pinot noir for the red wines. Terroir is all important, and the position of the maze of walled vineyards spreading in and around the villages, dictates which grapes will become Grand Cru, Village or Regional wines. Thirteen miles (21 km), southwest of Burgundy’s wine capital, Beaune, lies the Roman bath village of Santenay. Here, the majority of the vineyards are planted with grow pinot noir grapes, but the higher slopes are being planted more and more with Chardonnay. The red wines of Santenay are well structured and finely balanced. The whites have mineral undertones.

The Winemakers Welcome You...

Since 1893, the Chapelle family has put all their energy into producing exceptional wines that express their terroir. This winery has often been one of the region’s pioneers. Jean-François' great uncle was one of those that fought for the recognition of the Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée system for classifying wines. His father was one of the first Santeany winemakers to sell all of his wine directly, and in 2006, Jean-François was the first Santenay winemaker to convert the totality of his vines to being organically certified.

Jean-François and his wife, Yvette have been running the family winery since 1991.  In 2015, their son, Simon, joined the winery having finished his winemaking studies.  The next generation is now in place to continue the adventure!.

Red organic wine gift. Clos des Cornières, Santenay AOC red wine, the organic wine chosen by Gourmet Odyssey

Le Clos des Cornières

From Domaine Chapelle’s excellent wines, Gourmet Odyssey has chosen the Santenay “Clos des Cornières” organic red wine. This is a firm, ruby coloured wine, with red fruit scents of blackcurrant and raspberries, and a hint of liquorice coming through in the bouquet. The finish is smooth and well-balanced.
The grapes for this wine are grown in the vineyard that is adjacent to the family château, with views across to the typical Bourguignon roof-top of Château de Santenay, and down to the lower village. The wine gains its character from the south-easterly facing position of the vineyard, and the sandy-clay soil with fallen limestone rocks from the nearby cliffs; as well of course from the wine-making skills of Jean-François Chapelle. After the manual harvest, the wine is matured in oak barrels for 10-14 months.

Awards Domaine Chapelle 2021

The 2021 Hachette Wine Guide rewards the Domaine Chapelle's wine

To get 2021 started, what better way than a selection in the new Hachette wine guide! Just reward for their hard work in the vineyard and cellar, and their engagement with organic wine-making.
Two wines were selected.

The 2017 Petites Lolières is a Ladoix premier cru red wine, made using the grapes from a small vineyard in the north of this Burgundy appellation.  “On the nose it suggests fresh red fruits, mixed with slightly smoky aromas from the 15 months spent ageing in oak barrels.  Supported by the lovely silky tannins, it has a nice long finish. It will benefit from ageing in the cellar a little longer.”  To drink around 2023-2027.

The 2018 Saint-Jean Santenay white wine is made from the grapes from the vineyard behind the Saint-Jean church in the hamlet of Santenay-le-Haut.  The wine is “elegant on the nose with citrus, dried fruit, and white flower aromas.  On the palate it has a pure and sharp attack, developing into a more substantial and complex wine, with a hint of oak.” To drink around 2023-2026.

Congratulations to Jean-François and his team!

Gold medals for Domaine Chapelle

Domaine Chapelle once again came away with medals from the Challenge Millésime Bio international organic wine competition that takes place during the Millésime Bio organic wine trade show. This year the wine fair was digital only, but the blind tastings of the wines by a professional jury took place for the 1696 wines entered from 12 different countries.

omaine Chapelle was awarded two gold medals for their 2018 Chassagne Montrachet Morgeot Premier Cru, and for their 2018 Santenay La Comme Premier Cru red wines.

Congratulations to all the team for the fruits of their hard work!
