The Winery

Domaine Stentz-Buecher is to be found in the small village of Wettolsheim, close to Colmar, and is in the middle of the Alsace Wine Route.

The winery has 13 hectares of vines, all of which are organically certified and cultivated with the utmost respect and love of the surrounding environment. The winery’s philosophy is to let the vines develop and the wine age as naturally as possible, with the minimum of interference.

All the different types of Alsace wines are made at Domaine Stentz-Buecher, and as with many of the region’s winemakers, the winery’s vineyards are scattered around in Wettolsheim and the terroir of neighbouring villages. One of the main plots can be found in the excellent Rosenberg vineyard, and it is here that your adopted vines are located. The rich clay limestone soil helps produce intense, flowery wines that last on the palate.

Domaine Stentz-Buecher’s wines regularly feature in the main French wine guides such as the renowned French wine magazine La Revue du Vin de France, where the winery saw their Gewurztraminer Rosenberg selected as one of the best wines of the 2016 vintage. The 2020 Bettane+Desseauve wine guide chose three 2017 wines.  The Pinot Gris Rosenberg, the wine chosen for the Gourmet Odyssey Wine Experience, the Gewurztraminer Rosenberg, and the Reisling Steingrubler Grand Cru.  Domaine Stentz-Buecher was also mentioned in the Guide Carité des bonnes adresses du vin bio et biodynamique (good addresses for organic and biodynamic wines).

Region

Located between the river Rhine and the Vosges mountains, and at the Swiss and German borders, Alsace offers a diverse landscape of plains, forests, valleys, peaks and of course, vineyards.  Alsace is also famous for its numerous picturesque timber-framed villages.

Alsace is France’s largest white wine region, offering a great range of different styles of wine from dry crisp wines, fruity and aromatic wines to sweet wines.  The wines are labelled according to the grape varietal with Riesling, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Sylvaner and Gewurztraminer being the principal vines grown.

In the shelter of the Vosges mountains, the Alsace vineyards benefit from a dry and sunny micro-climate, especially in summer and autumn, which is perfect for cultivating vines.  The patchwork of different soils and reliefs makes the terroir all important, and each winemaker chooses their vines to best express the potential of each plot.

Vineyard Experience and Tour. Meet the winemakers, Stéphane and Céline at Domaine Stentz-Buecher, Wettolsheim, Alsace, France

The Winemakers Welcome You...

Domaine Stentz-Buecher is the fruit of the joining of two great winemaking families from Wettolsheim.

Created in 1975, following the wedding of Jean-Jacques Stentz and Simone Buecher, they each brought a few plots of vines and their know-how.  From 4 hectares of vines at the beginning, Jean-Jacques and Simone added some other vineyard plots over the years, and the winery now has 13 hectares of vines in total.

In 1996 the son of Jean-Jacques and Simone, Stéphane, joined the winery after his studies and time spent working in Australia. A few years later his sister Céline also joined the estate to concentrate on the commercial side of the business. Today, Stéphane and Céline have taken over the management of the winery, but as with all retired winemakers, Jean-Jacques and Simone are never far away! It remains very much a family operation.

Stéphane and Céline are passionate winemakers with an infectious love for life, and look forward to sharing their passion for winemaking with you.

Personalised Wine Gift. Pinot Gris Rosenberg, Wettolsheim, the wine chosen by Gourmet Odyssey

Pinot Gris Rosenberg

The wine chosen by Gourmet Odyssey for you is the Pinot Gris Rosenberg, which is made from the pinot gris vines located in the estate’s largest vineyard.

The Pinot Gris Rosenberg is a delicious white wine with a very expressive nose that is typical of the pinot gris grape variety. It is smokey and well rounded with hints of honey and dried fruits. It has good levels of acidity, bringing freshness and vigour, and also lasts long on the palate.

The harvest is entirely manual, and the grape juice is extracted using a slow and gentle press that enables a clearer juice to be obtained. After fermentation, the wine is aged on its fine lees in the cellar.

Domaine Stentz-Buecher in the spotlight

Céline Stentz-Koch, winemaker at Domaine Stentz-Buecher, recently lit up our screens with her appearance on one of France’s leading cultural television programmes, “Des Racines et des Ailes”.  She is a leading member of the Confrérie Saint-Eteinne d’Alsace, the Alsace winemakers’ guild that houses the largest collection of Alsace wines in the world at their headquarters in the Château de Kintzheim.  They were in the process of tasting the old vintages to check that they are still in good condition, and then replacing the corks with new ones to prolong the time they can be kept for.  Céline is a Major within the Guild, and helps to promote the guild and Alsace wines around the world.
The video can be watched here (French language only).

And the work in the cellar by Stéphane Stentz recived the praise of Jérôme Gagnez in the “On va déguster” radio show on France Inter.  You can hear the presenters in ecstatic appreciation of the winery’s Gewurztraminer Hengst Grand Cru as they choose it as being the perfect wine to pair with Asian cuisine and ginger based dishes.
The programme can be listened to here at minute 32’25” (French language only).
